DOCTOR  -  AUTHOR  -  INVENTOR

                                                                                            Samuel Carl Newsome, MD

Dr. Newsome was raised in King, North Carolina on a farm that has been in his family for generations.  He attended King School and graduated from South Stokes High School in 1967.  Sam graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1971 with a degree in American History and then attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine (now Wake Forest University Medical School) and received an MD degree in 1975.  He then completed a residency in Family Medicine.

In 1978 Dr. Newsome began his practice of Family Medicine in King, North Carolina in an office he built on his family’s land, and was on staff at Stokes County’s hospital for forty years.  He has been continually certified in Family Practice since 1978 and in Geriatric Medicine since 1992.  During his years of medical practice, he also helped staff the county health department, ran the county jail’s and the local state prison’s health programs.  He worked with the local skilled nursing facilities since 1980.  He has served as a county medical examiner from 1978 to 2020.

He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Betty Jo, since 1971. (Fiftieth anniversary upcoming in May 2021).  They have two children.  Carlton shares his father’s interest in writing.  Justin is an Engineer at Raytheon Aerospace.

Sam has learned that everyone has a story that they are usually willing to share.  Many also have unappreciated potential.  If that untapped potential can be fostered and developed, marvelous results occur.  That is the inspiration for Sam’s first novel, Jackie, recipient of the Garcia Memorial award for fiction book of the year, 2015.

His second  effort, Joe Peas, returned to Dr. Newsome’s background as a physician and educator.   That story won the CIPA (Colorado Independent Publisher’s Assoc.) prize for best fiction in 2017.

His current work, Boy in the treetops, involves the outer banks of North Carolina, and a family’s adjustment from city life to the coastal culture.  It reaches back in history to the low country of South Carolina in 1812.  It involves spirits, pirates, elderly con-men and fierce coastal storms.

His other activities include the invention of a vehicle ice safety array that was patented in 2018.
